What is the Imagebank?
England's Northwest Imagebank is a collection of some of the best photography taken in Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Liverpool. The site is not designed to be all-inclusive, but to showcase the best the region has to offer and give a flavour of its rich culture, business, nightlife, scenery, infrastructure, towns and cities.
What are the costs involved?
All of the images on this site are available to download and use for free by not-for-profit organisations only. However, the photographers involved may charge a fee for images larger than 10mb. This fee will be at the discretion of the photographer and will be agreed before the transaction takes place. The Northwest Development Agency will have no involvement with this transaction and it will be agreed between yourself and the photographer.
Who can use the site?
Anyone can browse the thumbnail images or download the wallpapers or free images. If you are a new user, please register your details. Successful submissions allow access to larger (“comping”) images. We also assess each submission to ensure it meets our criteria. Only organisations operating on a not-for-profit basis will be given full access to non-watermarked images and file downloads. We would not normally authorise individuals who wish to use the images for private purposes.
Can I register with a Hotmail or AOL address?
We currently don’t accept registrations from Hotmail or AOL addresses to limit abuse of the service.
Can I use the images as wallpaper?
We supply a range of free wallpapers for use on computer desktops; these are refreshed on a regular basis. We would not allow access to the Imagebank itself for this purpose.
Do I have to show an attribution or copyright notice?
Yes. This is one of our key terms of use. The actual attribution to be used is shown with the photograph itself.
Why all the restrictions?
We commission photography from a range of photographers. Their work is covered by copyright law and our agreement with them stipulates how we can use the images. This agreement only covers use by non-profit organisations who work to promote the region or work to support the Regional Economic Strategy. We therefore have systems in place to support those agreements.
Can I showcase my work in the Imagebank?
This is a facility we are considering and may launch during the latter part of 2006.
How to use the site.
Please login using the email address and password you registered with. If you have forgotten your password it can be emailed to the registered address.
What do the file sizes (Low, Medium, High) mean?
The three file sizes the library has available are suitable for various uses.
Low
This is a screen resolution file suitable for websites, video and presentations (such as PowerPoint). Because it is intended for screen use only, these images will be supplied in RGB colour format. This file size can be downloaded free of charge.
Medium (A5)
This is a print quality file size (300dpi and approximately A5 in size). This file size can be downloaded free of charge by organisations registered with the Image Bank.
High (A4 or over)
As with the Medium files, this size is also intended for print use but is approximately A4 in size. If you have selected this option you will be redirected to a form where you can make an automated email request to the photographer. You must use this form to contact the photographer with your request and they will supply the image(s) as you require for a small fee. They can also supply larger file sizes if required.
Alternatively you can get in touch with any of the photographers involved in this site and they will be happy to quote for the production of new photography.
